The Helmi Puppet Theatre was founded by Florian Loycke, Emir Tebatebai and Brian Morrow in Berlin in 2001.
From it's small beginnings it is now a well established group in the off-theatre scene in Germany and beyond.
Das Helmi receives an annual Grant from the German Government called Basisforderung (basic support) and is also supported by other goverment sponsored foundations like the Bundeskulturstiftung and the Goethe-Institut.
Das Helmi is based in Ballhaus Ost, a Theatre in the Prenzlauerberg district of Berlin and has six permanent Members and four permanent guests and has many other colourful and famous occasional guests.
Das Helmi collaborates on a regular basis with the State Theatres in Germany and Switzerland. It has also been asked to make Performances, Films and Puppets for other official organisations like Museums or Universities. It works regularly in the area of Community Arts and is able to deliver Puppet -Making Courses and Theatre Workshops in Universities and Schools.
There is a very productive and successful ongoing long-term Collaboration with Theater Hora from Zurich in Switzerland one of the worlds most famous Theatre Groups,who work with disabled performers.
Helmi Puppets and Actors work quite often as guests with famous theatre people in Germany such as Nicolas Stemann in Faust, (where 50 Helmi Puppets were used in the Show).Which was invited to the world renowned Theatertreffen in 2012. Das Helmi have also collaborated with the Director Jan Bosse in Gorky Theatre and with the Director Markus Oehrn in the Volksbuhne. Das Helmi has toured extensively in Europe,South America and Asia.
The Goethe-Institut has supported Das Helmi on various occasions to work in locations such as the Ivory Coast in West Africa in 2016. An extensive tour of Brazil in 2011. The United States in 2013 and South Korea in 2007.
Das Helmi is committed to creatively working with Refugees in Berlin since 2016 .
